CHANGE IS LIKE CHESS

In chess there are 10 to the power of 40 (10000000000000000000000000000000000000000) different ways the game might be played. It seems daunting as each independent move spawns another. A board that looks organized at first begins to feel chaotic. But then, you realize each move opens up a whole new world of possibilities. Every change that occurs makes new options available.

In a rapidly changing, highly complex world, our organizations are moving through these possibilities at record speed. The challenge of having 10 to the 40th power of options can be overwhelming. To compound the issue, knowing others have the same number of options, and that those choices can impact our next move makes it difficult to know what’s best. The lack of predictability means we can never plan for all the possible outcomes.

These are the challenges leaders face as they navigate change. While in chess we need only worry about the actual move to make, in life and leadership, we must also navigate the transitions and emotional impact of the move once it's made. Thankfully, as is in chess, employing some basic strategies can make the game more predictable.

Building our change leadership skills and knowing how to use change tools in the right way at the right time can make all the difference in the success of our change efforts.
